What is IV Therapy?

IV therapy refers to the administration of intravenous fluids, delivered directly to your bloodstream, and can include a mixture of vitamins, minerals, and supplements like antioxidants or amino acids, as well as IV medications. Sometimes also called an "IV Drip" or "IV Cocktail," this refers to the combination of nutrients you receive tailored to your specific symptoms via IV to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. At Higher Hydration, IV Therapy is administered by a Registered Nurse, and typically takes about 30-40 minutes for one liter of IV fluids.

Why are IV Vitamins better than oral medication?

When you receive fluids, medications and supplements via IV therapy, they bypass digestion and go directly into the blood stream. This has benefits:

  • Faster uptake: Instant uptake of fluids, medications and supplements by your body, so you feel better quicker

  • Better absorption: Your body can better absorb vitamins, medications and supplements via IV than via oral methods like pills (~50% of the vitamin is absorbed orally, while ~90% is absorbed in IV form)

  • Acute illness: When you're nauseous, have vomiting or diarrhea, stayed hydrated orally can be difficult.

  • Chronic illness: Bypassing digestion can be helpful - even necessary - for many sufferers of chronic illnesses, particularly those that impair digestive organs like IBS, IBD, GERD, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease and Colitis.

  • Age: Our ability to digest and absorb vitamins from pills - and from food itself - gets worse as we age, and can lead to deficiencies. Even mild deficiencies in certain vitamins can lead to fatigue, brain fog and faster aging.

  • Lifestyle: Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol and drug use can impact your ability to absorb the nutrients from pills, while at the same time depleting your body of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in order to process these toxins.

  • Diet: People on restrictive diets may not get enough of certain vitamins and minerals from food.

Do you help treat terminally ill patients or those with chronic conditions?

With IV Therapy, consistent and quality nutrition is a stepping stone to improved overall health. These nutrients can help improve organ function and the immune system for better wellbeing while our non-narcotic pain relief and anti-nausea medication options can offer relief to those facing chronic pain conditions.

What are the contraindications for IV therapy?

Prior to treatment, we review health history, allergies, screen for contraindications, and take a full set of vitals to ensure you are an appropriate candidate for IV therapy.

  • Congestive Heart Failure

  • Kidney Failure

  • Chronic Kidney Disease

  • Heart Arrhythmia

  • Liver Cirrhosis

  • Bleeding/Clotting Disorders

How often should I get an IV?

It totally depends on your wellness needs and goals!

Acute illness, like food poisoning, flu or a cold? One treatment often does the trick, or call us on back-to-back days if you're suffering with diarrhea or vomiting that just won't relent.

Migraines? It works best if you call us as soon as you feel it coming, but we are often able to help patients find relief even when they call on day 3 of a migraine.

Suffering from low energy & immunity, or struggling with symptoms of chronic illnesses and GI issues that leave you depleted? Many of our clients with these issues opt for weekly treatments to try to get on top of their hydration and vitamin needs, and they love the consistent boost of energy from weekly treatments.

Weight loss, detox, beauty or performance goals? We have many weekly, biweekly, or single-event-based clients who love the way they feel, look & perform when they are treating themselves to IV therapy on a regular basis, or even just in the few days leading up to an event!
